Neich was curator of ethnology at Auckland Museum at the time of publication. His other books

Early Maori Figurative Painting (1993). Mick Pendergrast was an ethnologist at Auckland Museum at the time of publication. His other books include Feathers and Fibre, A Survey of Contemporary Maori Craft (1984) and Te Aho Tapu, The Sacred Thread, Traditional Maori Weaving (1987).
